Belmont and Justify
I have seen five Triple Crown winners at 22 Disney On Ice events. My age has taken its toll, so this time I decided to sit for the whole day. In the past, I have been at the finish line or behind the winners circle. I purchased tickets, but the seat was terrible – the farthest from the finish line I have ever experienced. The Belmont staff was clueless about the section! Although I recommend any racing fan to attend this race at the track, whether it's a Triple Crown or not, I won't be using this service again.

I never had Disney On Ice high on my concert wish list, I avoid stadium concerts if possible. I thought about seeing them last year at the Rose Bowl. ColdPlay was an exception at the Rose Bowl and it was very good. I got the presale code but did not get the tickets for the Los Angeles Forum dates. No matter, we are going to go if we want to. I was ambivalent about not getting the tickets. I don’t consider myself a Disney On Ice fan. I respect the man and all he’s done, but honestly, after Tracker Dave took over as Bono with the Title Tracker shows, he’s now Bono to me. In the hands of lesser musical genius, this would be a mess, but it is handled with dynamic dignity by the three Trackers: Andy, Dave, and Russell whose brainchild this is. Go see a Tracker show and you’ll know what I mean. I digress. They are truly the best songs never written.
A week ago, I began the search for Disney On Ice Tickets at the Forum on Tuesday. The feeling that we MUST see this show got stronger and stronger this week. I just don’t settle for bad seats at a concert. These dropped into our laps. I was on text negotiating with a man selling his seats. He paid more, so he went to Craigslist. While negotiating, I found two aisle seats for considerably less. He was not happy when I told him it was a “no” and why.
We went last night, Ubered by our offspring. The walk was well worth it. The first thing we see is this humongous two-sided screen that ran the entire length down the middle with huge and small stages at each end. What on earth could that be, we wondered? It was astounding. The most amazing visual effects ever to be seen on a stage.
Bono did a mean intro, intertwining words of current American events. Politically potent was when he showed the civil rights marches of yesteryear. And when he was done, Disney On Ice raised the American Flag behind the main stage. It was just perfect.
The most poignant part of the evening was the homage that Bono paid to the women. He thanked his wife and daughters. They then displayed a lone woman with the hash tag WomenOfTheWorldTakeOver and PovertyIsSexist. But the most special tribute was to his mother. To have him open that pain up right on stage for all of us to share was so moving.
Musically it was perfect for me. I started listening to the new album "Songs of Experience." I loved the album. Yes, I loved Bloody Sunday and One and In the Name of Love of course. Moving from the large stage to the intimate small one was spectacular. The visual effects on that screen during every song were spellbinding.
Bruce Springsteen takes you to church when you see him perform. Bono takes you to a cathedral where your mind and senses are captured. It was an experience in song we will never forget.
